The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is a significant free trade agreement initiated by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2012. It encompasses 15 member countries, including China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and the ten ASEAN nations. This agreement stands as the largest and most important free trade negotiation in the Asia-Pacific region, covering nearly half of the world's population and nearly a third of global trade volume. Upon its implementation, RCEP is poised to become the world's most populous and dynamically diverse free trade area.

Members of the Agreement

The RCEP agreement includes 15 member countries: the 10 ASEAN nations, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. This diverse group of countries represents a significant portion of the global economy and is expected to drive regional economic integration.

Significance of the Agreement

According to Wang Shouwen, Vice Minister of Commerce and Deputy Representative for International Trade Negotiations, RCEP is a comprehensive, modern, high-quality, and mutually beneficial free trade agreement. As of November 6, 2019, RCEP covers over 3.5 billion people, accounting for 47.4% of the global population, with a combined GDP of 32.2% of the global total and foreign trade volume of 29.1%. The agreement is set to further integrate the region's industries and value chains, providing a strong impetus for regional economic integration.

Social Evaluation

Wang Shouwen has noted that RCEP is a mutually beneficial free trade agreement that balances goods trade, services trade, investment, and regulatory areas. The agreement also includes provisions for economic and technical cooperation, offering transitional arrangements for the least developed countries such as Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia, allowing them to better integrate into regional economic integration.
